What the heck do all these things mean? Also, some things to say. What I endorse and not.

Edited 5/8/09

Newcomers (NOOBS-ehem, excuse me, Newbs) to the internet, particular to the anime doujinshi and image community, may not know what all these things mean. Whether it is a term or commonly untranslated Japanese term, this place is for you!

Part 1: Terms
Anime: Japanese Animation. I really hope you know that much. Also called Japanimation.
Manga: The book form of Anime. Or is Anime the animated version of Manga? Manga is usually read right to left, just like almost all other Japanese reading material.
Doujin/Doujinshi: Parody works of a sort. Copyrights seem to be a little looser in Japan, and Doujinshi writers write their own fanfiction manga of any anime/manga series. It is a misconception to say all Doujinshi are Hentai. Many of the releases on this website are Doujins, but not all are, such as official magazines like Yurihime. For simplicity sake, I call manga-like material I upload doujins because you can't always tell the difference.
Hentai: It's the exact opposite of a basket full of kittens. Hentai is essentially the Japanese drawn version of pornography. People under 18 are recomended to not view Hentai material.
Yuri: A genre in manga, anime, etc, that pertains to mature and likely sexual female/female relationships.
Yuri also means "Lily" in Japanese. In case you were wondering why my blog background was lilies. =D
Yaoi: A genre in manga, anime, etc, that pertains to mature and likely sexual male/male relationships.
Shoujo-Ai: A genre that pertains to female/female relationships. Usually ok for all audiences.
Example: Yurihime is a magazine focusing on Shoujo-ai relationships.
Shounen-Ai: A genre that pertains to male/male relationships. Usually ok for all audiences.
(I don't have an example)
Shoujo: A genre usually focusing on females as main characters, usually in a love/real life setting.
Example: Skip-Beat is a Shoujo.
Shounen: A genre usually focusing on males as main characters, usually involving fantasy or adventure.
Examples: One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and Bleach are all popular Shonen titles. Shounen Jump circulates in the US and Japan.
Mecha: Mecha genre focuses on science fiction and fights involving robots.
Example: Evangelion is a Mecha anime.
Sentai: A genre focusing on heroes in spandex trying to save the world.
Example: Power Rangers is an American form of Sentai.
(more genres to come as I think of them)

Other terms:
Tsundere: Personality type of someone who acts brash and agressive on the outside but can be modest, loving and nice on the inside. Usually for a female character. Wiki definition.
Yandere: A personality type used to describe someone of the opposite nature of Tsundere. They seem kind and loving at first, but can end up being deranged, angry, and psychotic. Wiki definition.

Part 2: Lost on Translation:
san: mister/miss
chan: like san, only for younger people/girls
kun: like san, only for younger people/boys
Oneesan/Oneechan: Older sister.
Oniisan/oniichan: Older brother (oniikun does not exist)
(name)-Ne, (name)-ni: Adding ne (sister) or ni (brother) to a name is sometimes used to adress an older sibling.
Nihongo: Japanese
Eigo: English
Nihon: Japan
Nihonjin: Japanese person
Oi, ne, naa: Hey
Mou!: C'mon already, jeez.
Fufufu: (laughing)
Are!?: (pronounced A-reh) Eh? What?
ossan/occhan: old man
basan/bachan: Old lady
(name)-Sama: A Mr. or Miss with a great amount of respect implied.
Ojousan: Landlady
(more to come as I think of them)

Part 3: My tags:
I cover many subgenres when I tag uploaded works. Here is an explanation of each tag, even ones I do not use.
First, tags I DO use:
(Y) Yuri.
(S) Shoujo-Ai.
(B) Bondage: Tieing up. Torture. Whipping. Chaining. Many scary things happen in Bondage. Sane people may not enjoy it, but maybe sadists will...
Only light amounts of bondage are overlooked on my website. Anything torturous or extreme will be overlooked or thrown into a waste basket at the nearest Taco Bell.
(3, 4) Three/Four: Sometimes a doujin may include a small crowd or party of people together.
(T) Tools: In adult material doujins/images/videos, one may try to enhance their experience with a tool, most often a vibrator.
(D) Dildo: An extreme use of a larger tool. Use your imagination. Or better yet, don't.
(L) Lolicon: From the word "lolita complex" meaning liking little girls. Includes loli, a term for an underage girl. Lolicon hentai can be considered pedophilia material, and can be deemed illegal.
(F) Female Dominance: Not to be confused with rape. One simply has another under their control, and the other is usually at least semi-willing.
(U) Furry: Well. How to describe this. Sometimes characters take on animal-like qualities, most commonly a cat tail and cat ears.
(N) Nekomimi: Not as extreme as Furry. Limited to only ears and a tail, while looking mostly human. Nekomimi pertains mostly to catike people, but I also use this term for another animal-like people.
(R) Rape: Sex without consent. Enough said.
Some lighter degrees of rape may be overlooked on a doujin or two. Please let it be known that even if I have some rape content uploaded onto this website, I in no way endorse or personally approve of it. Women are raped in life, and it is truly a horrible concept to even think about. I would never under any circumstance rape anyone, nor would I ever wish it upon any other person. The fact that rape even exists is one of the many reasons I disdain men in general. Let it also be known I am not a feminist, but I share many of its views. (I could never call myself a true feminist... I mean look, I have a pornography website)
I am done preaching now. I just felt that it had to be said. I could say more, such as yes I know women rape too, but never to the extent men do. Ok, I am done. This can be a whole other topic for a side blog if need be.

Now ones I DON'T use:
Futanari: Dickgirl genre. A woman has a penis whether by magic, some crazy science fiction, or she was born that way. You can imagine what happens next with the other girl. Or not.
Futanari will never be accepted on my website. There are many others that have it, I even link to a few. Go there for it.
Please let it be known I do not discriminate against hermaphrodites or people with similar circumstances. I understand that some people are just born that way, and they can do nothing about it. I just choose not to host this genre.
Scat: Number 2. Dropping the kids off at the pool. You know what it is.
Scat will never be allowed on my website. I find it very disgusting.
Guro: Severed limbs and buckets of blood. Possibly pure torture and pain beyond words.
No, no, no, no, no, and no. Oh wait maybe-no. Never on my website. I may allow maybe a wound or two, say some characters are fighting evil or trip down some stairs... but no otherwise. If there is a small-medium amount of blood for any reason, it will be carefully tagged.
Bestiality: Sexual contact or intercourse with animals.
Bestiality will never be allowed on my website. Its even illegal.
Shotacon: Shota is used to describe content with young boys. Shotacon hentai can be considered pedophilia material, and can be deemed illegal. It comes from the word Sho, meaning few, small, or young. (The word Shonen in Shonen jump means few and years, use to describe a young lad)

Comments are appreciated. I pray I have covered enough and an argument does not escalate. If one does, I will do my best to mediate.

  1. Maybe you should include "tsundere" as a term, it's in your name and all =P
(Yandere too, while you're at it xD)
